Film making techniques - The Hunger Games

Watch this YouTube video to understand framing, camera angles and lighting in this trailer of The Hunger Games.

What is "mise-en-scene"?

Mise-en-scene (French for "placing on stage") is the selection and arranging of everything in a scene, including props, lighting, colour, costumes, decor... which helps the director establish the story he/she wants to tell.

Watch the clip below from the 2:00 mark to the end.

How many images of poverty and deprivation can you spot?

Isn't it amazing how much information the director has managed to put in a scene that goes for less than a minute? Compare this to a novel, where a description of a town could go on for many pages.

Compare it to the scenes of luxury and excess in the Capital.
